NASA discovers a new crater on the Moon

The US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has discovered a new small crater on the moon, likely created by the impact of a Russian probe that attempted to land on the lunar surface about two weeks ago.

These findings were made by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO), which compared images before and after the impact point. The images were provided by the Russian space agency, Roscosmos.

The Luna-25 probe crashed on August 19, dashing Moscow's hopes of reviving its program of trips to the moon, as Russia aimed to become the first country to land on the lunar south pole.

But, India managed to successfully land the probe san Chandaryaan 3. The landing of the probe at the lunar south pole took place on August 23 and the probe is currently exploring this area.

LRO, which has been orbiting the moon since 2009, took the pre-crash pictures of the Russian probe in June 2022. These images were compared with pictures taken on August 24, 2023.

"Since the new crater is close to where Luna-25 collided, the LRO probe team concluded that it is likely that the crater was caused by this event, rather than by any natural impact," NASA said in a statement. -s.

The new crater is about 10 meters in diameter and about 400 kilometers from where Luna-25 was predicted to land.

NASA also plans to return to lunar missions through the Artemis program, which aims to establish a permanent presence in lunar space. The ice found on the Moon can be used to support human habitats or it can be split into hydrogen and oxygen to be used as rocket fuel./ REL
