Artificial intelligence models that support chatbots can help plan an attack with a biological weapon, according to a study by a US institute.

A report from the Rand Corporation published on Monday tested several large language models (LLMs) and found that they can provide instructions that "could help plan and execute a biological attack." However, preliminary findings also indicated that LLMs did not generate clear biological instructions for creating weapons.

Biological weapons are among the serious threats associated with artificial intelligence that will be discussed at the global AI security summit next month in the UK. 

However, the Rand researchers said the need for rigorous testing of the models was "unclear." They said AI companies should limit opening LLMs to conversations like those in their report./ CNA
