iPhone - 16 years since its release

The Apple company on Tuesday presented its latest phone, the iPhone 15. The event from its headquarters in Cupertino, California was watched with interest around the world. But how did this revolutionary device for the personal digital technology market begin its journey? Let's follow the material below.

The Apple company presented its latest line of phones. The iPhone 15 has updated cameras, faster microcircuits have been produced for it and stronger materials such as titanium have been used. The iPhone 15 will now also use the unified USB-C technology for receiving power.

But what were the beginnings of the iPhone, this device that revolutionized the communications market worldwide?

In January 2007, Apple's then-CEO Steve Jobs took the stage to unveil the device that combined the iPod, traditional phone and web browser. Thus, the iPhone was born.

It had a data storage capacity of only 4 gigabytes, an operating memory of 128 megabytes and a screen with a resolution of 480x320 pixels. It had only a 2 megapixel camera.

The device went on sale a few months later, with tremendous success. People spent the night outside stores waiting in line to buy an iPhone.

"It's the iPhone. It will go down in the history of all mobile devices. It's going to be a big moment, a big game changer for mobile and innovation. It is Apple that innovates first. "Apple made it happen when others hadn't even thought of it yet," said Jessica Rodriguez while waiting in line to buy an iPhone.

The first-generation iPhone was followed by the iPhone 3G, which offered 3G Internet browsing speeds, built-in GPS, and access to the App Store.

In 2010, the iPhone had the biggest design change, with straight corners, a glass back, and a high-resolution display called Retina.

"I think that first of all Apple has created the most advanced phone of all time. There are options that have become a part of this phone as they were requested by people. For example. front camera, a better main camera and a flash. It's also lighter, smaller and those who have used it consider it a step forward in design," said Luke Peters, then publisher of T3 Magazine.

The iPhone 4 was recalled due to antenna issues. The steel structure lost the signal if held in a certain position. The iPhone 5 had a similar design, but had a screen enlarged to 4 inches.

In 2014, Apple introduced the iPhone 6 with a screen up to 5.5 inches.

"iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are without a doubt the best iPhones we've ever made," said Apple CEO Tim Cook.

But the biggest redesign came with the iPhone X, which Apple introduced on the 10th anniversary of the iPhone in 2017. For the first time, the company decided to remove the physical Touch ID button, which had been used for fingerprint scanning of the finger since the iPhone 5S. In its place, Apple introduced FaceID technology, which scans the face through sensors located at the top of the screen. The iPhone X was also remembered for the first time the price increased to $999.

With the iPhone 12 and 14 versions, Apple returned to straight corners and with the iPhone 14 Pro camera eliminated the protruding part at the top of the screen.

“As always, the components are absolutely impressive, definitely the new microcircuits. Everything is faster, brighter, with more battery life. I think they are also more focused on services. I think among the most important are the security of their services and the technology to save the battery," says Julie Ask, a technology analyst at the research firm "Forrester Research".

There are analysts, however, who say that Apple has lost its leading role in innovation in recent years.

"Apple is no longer the innovation factory it once was. It's now more like a factory that's very good at building on ideas created under previous leaders and making a lot of money from it," said Michael Liedtke, a technology specialist at the Associated Press news agency.

The Apple company continues to maintain a wide and loyal base of iPhone users, a base which even grew significantly during the pandemic./ VOA
