Weiper unlucky, Mainz punished at the end. Hamburg convinces at the start

Mainz started the Bundesliga with a 1-0 loss to Cologne, playing with 10 men for half an hour after Nebel was sent off.

The first half brought chances from both teams, but also a significant injury for the home team, as Hollerbach was forced off the field after just 15 minutes. In the second half, Mainz tried with Amiri and Weiper, but Cologne goalkeeper Schwäbe reacted with a decisive save.

The only goal of the match came in the 89th minute, when Bülter headed home a cross from Waldschmidt. It was Cologne's first away win, equalling their number of away wins from last season.

Meanwhile, Borussia Mönchengladbach could only manage a goalless draw against Hamburg. The newly-returned Bundesliga friends after more than seven years showed positive signs, creating several chances in the first half.

Gladbach increased the pressure after the break, but were unable to break down Hamburg's organised defence. The match ended 0-0, leaving both teams with one point each at the start of the season.
