Football in mourning, coach Mircea Lucescu passes away

Legendary coach Mircea Lucescu has passed away at the age of 80, after suffering a heart attack on April 3 in hospital.

His health problems began during Romania's training camp, before a friendly match against Slovakia, which they lost 0-2. He was hospitalized and never recovered.

The death came just days after he ended his second stint as Romania coach, following a 0-1 defeat to Turkey that denied them World Cup qualification. Lucescu had taken charge of the national team in August 2024.

He won 37 trophies during his career, ranking among the most successful coaches in history. He had great success with Shakhtar Donetsk, where he won 8 league titles and the UEFA Cup in 2009.

He also won titles with Galatasaray and Be?ikta?, as well as the European Super Cup in 2000.
