Serious accident, former Greek player dies at the age of 33

Former Greek footballer Marios Oikonomou has died at the age of 33 after a serious road accident that occurred nine days ago.

The former defender did not survive the severe brain injuries he suffered, leading to his untimely passing. Throughout his career, he played for well-known clubs in Europe such as AEK, Bologna, Copenhagen, Sampdoria and Panathinaikos.

Oikonomou also recorded six official appearances with the Greek national team, and managed to win the championship title in Denmark in 2022. After retiring from football in 2024, he maintained a close connection with the PAS Giannina club, where he had also taken his first steps as a sportsman.

The PAS Giannina club has reacted through an official statement, expressing its deepest condolences to the family of the former footballer and his father, who currently holds the role of president of this team.
