Study: Starting to smoke before age 20 increases stroke risk

Researchers at Seoul National University Hospital in Korea analyzed health data from more than 9.2 million adults to understand the link between age of smoking initiation and the risk of stroke and heart attack later in life.

The study confirms that starting smoking before the age of 20 is associated with serious health consequences in the future, even if someone has stopped smoking for many years.

During the follow-up period, about 9.3 years, people who started drinking before age 20 had more than double the risk of heart attack compared to non-smokers and about 80% higher risk of stroke.

Even people who stopped smoking remained at increased risk, compared to non-smokers.

The results were highest for those who started before the age of 15, who had an even greater risk of stroke, heart attack, cardiovascular disease and death.

The study suggests that smoking at a young age can cause long-term inflammation, stronger nicotine addiction and negatively affect cholesterol levels. /CNA
