New study: Type of alcohol affects risk of death

A new study suggests that not only the amount, but also the type of alcohol we consume can significantly affect our health and longevity.

The research, presented at a meeting of the American College of Cardiology in New Orleans, finds that beer, cider and spirits are linked to a higher risk of premature death - even when consumed in low amounts.

In contrast, moderate wine consumption was associated with a roughly 21% lower risk of death from heart disease.

The study was based on data from around 341,000 people from the UK Biobank project, who were followed for more than 13 years. The results showed that people who consumed high amounts of alcohol had:

-24% higher risk of premature death from any cause

-36% higher risk of dying from cancer

-14% higher risk of death from heart disease

Also, low consumption of beer, cider or spirits was associated with a 9% increased risk of death from cardiovascular disease.

According to researchers, wine may have a more protective effect due to its ingredients, but also because it is usually consumed with meals and by people with healthier lifestyles.

However, experts emphasize that the findings are still preliminary and need to be confirmed by other scientific studies./ CNA
