Who is more at risk of becoming obese after marriage: men or women?

Obesity rates have doubled worldwide since 1990, with more than 2.5 billion adults and children considered overweight or obese. By 2050, it is estimated that more than half of adults and a third of children will be above normal weight levels.

However, new research has highlighted another risk factor, beyond, for example, an unbalanced diet, a lifestyle and a hereditary predisposition: marriage.

Specifically, researchers at the National Heart Institute in Warsaw, Poland, after studying data from 2,405 people with an average age of 50, concluded that married men are 3.2 times more likely to be obese than single men.

Nothing similar was observed in women. However, all married people, regardless of gender, are more likely to be overweight (this probability is 62% for men and 39% for women).

Previous studies have reached similar conclusions, such as a Chinese study (2024) that found that the percentage of overweight and obese men is higher among married men, at 5.2% and 2.5%, respectively. A previous study from the University of Bath had shown that married men weigh more than their single peers, by an average of 1.4 kg.

Of course, weight gain, according to the new Polish study, is also linked to age: each additional year increases the risk of overweight by 3% in men and 4% in women, and the risk of obesity by 4% in men and 6% in women. Women, in particular, are at higher risk for obesity if they suffer from depression, have lower levels of education or live in smaller communities, factors that do not seem to play a role in the case of men. /CNA
