The nutritional secret to keeping your heart healthy

According to scientific studies, one of the main nutritional "secrets" for a healthy heart is consuming foods rich in phytosterols, a natural compound found in many plant foods.

What are phytosterols?

Phytosterols are substances found naturally in plant foods and may improve metabolism, reduce inflammation, and help reduce the risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

Long-term studies that followed more than 200,000 people for 36 years showed that people who regularly consumed foods rich in these substances had a lower risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

Foods that contain the most phytosterols are mainly plant foods, such as: nuts and dried fruits, pumpkin or sunflower seeds, whole grains (oats, barley), legumes (chickpeas, lentils, soybeans), various fruits and vegetables, vegetable oils, especially olive oil.

Researchers found that a diet that includes approximately: 5 servings of vegetables, 3 servings of fruit, 2 servings of whole grains, and a few nuts or seeds each day is healthier for the heart. /CNA
