Study: Collagen rejuvenates skin but doesn't stop wrinkles

Taking collagen supplements daily can revitalize the skin by increasing elasticity and hydration, but it will not stop wrinkles.

This is stated in a study, where experts emphasize that collagen may be best, not an anti-wrinkle treatment, but maintenance for aging and sun-damaged skin.

Researchers from Anglia Ruskin University say they are very confident that collagen pills or powder offer "some legitimate benefits" for the skin if taken over time, but they are not a quick fix.

Collagen is a type of protein that is naturally produced in the body, but decreases with age. It supports and strengthens skin, nails, bones, and connective tissues, including tendons and cartilage. There are several types of supplements that people can take, including marine, bovine, and vegan collagen.

Bridget Benelam, a nutrition scientist at the British Nutrition Foundation, said diet was also important for skin health.

Vitamin C helps form collagen, so making sure you get enough from foods such as citrus fruits, berries, green vegetables, peppers and tomatoes can help. Zinc, which is found in meat, poultry, cheese, some shellfish, nuts, seeds and whole grains, also helps the body produce collagen. /CNA
