A new Chinese study found a link between high salt consumption and a greater risk of depressive illness.
Researchers analyzed data from over 15,000 adults. They assessed how often people added extra salt to their food, other than that used during cooking, and compared this with depression test results.
The result: A higher frequency of salt intake was associated with depressive symptoms and in some cases, even with more severe depressive disorders.
This connection may be related to biological mechanisms such as immune system responses, effects on stress hormones, and changes in gut microbiota, areas that require more scientific research.
What can you do?
Reducing the amount of salt you put in your food may be a simple strategy to support mental health, although research is ongoing and these results do not yet prove an absolute cause-and-effect.
For the better, a balanced diet, with fruits, vegetables and few processed foods, is often recommended for mental and physical health. /CNA
