Hungary's parliament votes to remove president from office

Hungary's parliament has approved the dismissal of President Tamás Sulyok, marking one of the most significant political developments since the new government of Prime Minister Péter Magyar came to power.

With a two-thirds majority, the ruling Tisza party deputies approved the 17th amendment to the Constitution, which ends the mandate of Sulyok, as well as that of the president of the Constitutional Court, Péter Polt. The decision comes after Tisza's victory in the parliamentary elections in April, ending 16 years of rule by former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's Fidesz party.

According to the procedure, President Sulyok has five days to sign the amendment or send it for review to the Constitutional Court. Prime Minister Magyar has warned that, if the president chooses the second option, the government will immediately initiate proceedings to impeach him, which would automatically suspend him from office.

Another possibility remains the resignation of the president to avoid a constitutional crisis, a step that the new government has publicly called for.

During the parliamentary session, Fidesz deputies walked out of the chamber before the vote, accusing the government of concentrating power and building an authoritarian system. According to the opposition, the new amendment gives the executive broad powers to dismiss senior state officials.

The constitutional package also provides for the removal of Constitutional Court judges who are over the age of 70, as well as a ban on those who have served three parliamentary terms from running for office. This measure affects a large number of Fidesz MPs.

Meanwhile, the crisis within Viktor Orbán's party appears to be deepening. The former prime minister has been absent from parliament following his election defeat, while Gergely Gulyás, one of Fidesz's top leaders, has resigned as the leader of the parliamentary group.

The 17th Amendment is considered part of the reforms undertaken by the new government to restructure state institutions and prepare for the adoption of a new constitution within the next two or three years./ CNA
