Murder of former minister/Anti-terrorism takes over the investigation

Counter-terrorism police have taken control of the investigation into the death of former British Conservative minister Ann Widdecombe after new information and evidence emerged.

A 28-year-old man from Rotherham, who was initially arrested for murder, has now been rearrested on suspicion of committing, preparing or inciting acts of terrorism. Widdecombe, 78, was found dead at her home in Haytor, Devon, last Thursday, having suffered serious injuries.

The head of the National Counter-Terrorism Police, Laurence Taylor, stated that multiple lines of investigation are being pursued to determine the motive for this attack, while emphasizing that the new arrest comes after "dynamic and complex" developments in the investigation.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, in a statement to the House of Commons, confirmed that the suspect had not previously been on the watch list of the government's counter-extremism programme "Prevent".

She praised Widdecombe as a "brave and forthright" figure, while adding that her death has raised serious concerns about the safety of public figures, announcing that protection protocols for MPs are being reviewed.

So far, the investigation has uncovered CCTV footage showing the suspect leaving Rotherham in a vehicle towards Devon, hours before the attack is thought to have taken place.

Despite the new nature of the counter-terrorism investigation, authorities continue to remain open to all leads, while the police presence in the area where the incident occurred will remain increased in the coming weeks.

This event has shocked public opinion in Great Britain, where political leaders from all sides have expressed condolences for the passing of one of the most well-known and controversial figures in British politics in decades. /CNA
