Fire at a bar in Bangkok / 27 deaths reported

A massive fire has engulfed a bar in Bangkok, Thailand, killing 27 people and leaving eight in critical condition.

Authorities said the flames broke out near the stage of the bar in the popular Chatuchak area and spread quickly, knocking out power and filling the area with thick smoke. Witnesses said customers panicked as they tried to flee the building.

Firefighters arrived at the scene shortly after midnight and managed to bring the fire under control within about 30 minutes. Most of the victims were found in a bathroom, where they are believed to have entered to escape the flames and smoke.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the fire may have been caused by an electrical short circuit in an air conditioner, however authorities emphasize that the official cause will only be determined after the completion of the expertise.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, who visited the scene, said a musician who was performing at the time of the fire told him that explosions were heard first and then everyone tried to escape the smoke and flames. According to him, many people headed to the back of the building and took refuge in the toilets, where they died of asphyxiation.

More than 60 people are being treated in hospital, including eight in critical condition. Authorities believe most of the victims died from smoke inhalation.

Bangkok Governor Chatchart Sittipunt said flammable materials used in ceiling decoration may have contributed to the rapid spread of the flames. Reports of people found unconscious near emergency exits also raised suspicions that there may have been obstructions during the evacuation.

The incident highlights Thailand's ongoing fire safety problems. Although authorities have promised to tighten safety standards after previous tragedies, enforcement has been criticized as lax. In 2022, a fire at a nightclub near Bangkok killed 22 people, while the worst tragedy was a Bangkok nightclub fire in 2009, which killed 66 people and injured more than 200./ CNA
