Why do mosquitoes bite some people more than others?

Many people believe that mosquitoes prefer those with "sweet blood," but scientific studies show that the reason is quite different. According to experts, female mosquitoes are primarily attracted to the carbon dioxide (CO?) we exhale when we breathe, body heat, and the unique scent of our skin.

People who produce more CO?, such as older adults, pregnant women, or people who have just exercised, are more attractive to mosquitoes. Also, higher body temperature and sweat increase the likelihood of being bitten.

The skin microbiome also plays an important role. Bacteria that live on its surface produce aromatic substances that mosquitoes can easily detect. Researchers have found that people with higher levels of certain organic acids in their skin can be up to 100 times more attractive to mosquitoes than others.

Scientists emphasize that this tendency is mainly linked to genetic factors and remains relatively unchanged over time. On the other hand, the reaction to bites also varies from one person to another, as the immune system affects the intensity of itching and swelling.

Experts advise that, regardless of whether a person is bitten frequently or rarely, the use of repellents, protective nets, and clothing that covers the body remains the best way to protect against mosquitoes./ CNA
