Study: Sperm motility peaks in summer, drops in winter

A new international study has found that sperm quality, particularly its motility, is highest during the summer months and lowest in the winter.

The research, published in the scientific journal Reproductive Biology and Endocrinology, analyzed sperm samples from 15,581 men aged 18 to 45 in Denmark and Florida (USA). The study was conducted by researchers from the United Kingdom, Canada and Denmark.

According to the results, sperm motility – its ability to effectively “swim” towards the egg – was consistently highest in June and July, both in the cool climate of Denmark and the warm climate of Florida. In contrast, the lowest levels were recorded in December and January.

However, the researchers found no seasonal changes in total sperm concentration or ejaculate volume. This means that the number of sperm produced remains stable throughout the year, but their ability to move varies with the seasons.

Professor Allan Pacey from the University of Manchester, co-author of the study, said the results were surprising because of the similarity of the seasonal pattern in two very different climates.

"Even in Florida, where temperatures remain warm year-round, sperm motility peaked in the summer and declined in the winter. This suggests that ambient temperature alone does not explain these changes," he said.

Researchers emphasize that the optimal testicular temperature should be 2 to 4 degrees lower than average body temperature (37°C), as deviations from this can negatively affect sperm motility and, consequently, fertility.

According to experts, understanding these seasonal patterns could help improve fertility treatments and optimize the timing of testing for couples trying to have children./ CNA
