A 24-minute music session can significantly reduce anxiety

A new study from Toronto Metropolitan University suggests that a short music session of about 24 minutes can help significantly reduce anxiety symptoms.

The clinical trial involved 144 adults with moderate anxiety who were receiving medication. Researchers tested the effect of music designed with auditory brainwave stimulation (ABS), a technique that aims to influence brain activity.

Participants were divided into four groups: one group listened to pink noise (such as rain or waves), while the other three groups listened to music with ABS for 12, 24 and 36 minutes. Before and after the sessions, they completed tests to measure their anxiety and mood levels.

The results showed that all sessions of ABS music helped reduce cognitive and physical symptoms of anxiety, such as uncontrollable thoughts, difficulty concentrating, and physical discomforts such as nausea and chest pain. However, the strongest effect was observed in the 24-minute session.

According to co-author Frank Russo, this duration represents a “sweet spot”: long enough to significantly impact anxiety, but not so long that it becomes difficult to engage in daily routines.

Researchers emphasize that while traditional treatments such as therapy and medications remain important, music-based tools may offer a simple, affordable and side-effect-free alternative for managing anxiety./ CNA
