Morning exercise linked to greater benefits for heart and metabolism

A new study suggests that early morning exercise may offer greater health benefits compared to physical activity at other times of the day.

Researchers report that people who exercise regularly in the early hours of the morning are less likely to develop cardiovascular disease and metabolic problems.

According to data presented at a meeting of the American College of Cardiology, exercising between 7 and 8 a.m. was linked to the lowest risk of coronary artery disease.

The study was based on the analysis of around 14,500 people whose activity was monitored through wearable devices over the course of a year.

The results showed that those who exercised early had:

31% less likely to have coronary artery disease

18% less likely to have high blood pressure

21% less likely to have high cholesterol

30% less likely to have type 2 diabetes

35% less likely to be obese

Lead researcher, Prem Patel, emphasized that any form of exercise is beneficial, but the timing of physical activity may play an additional role in improving health.

However, experts caution that these findings are still preliminary and do not fully explain why morning exercise may be more beneficial. Factors such as hormones, sleep and lifestyle may influence this link.

The study is expected to be presented on March 29 and will require further confirmation through peer-reviewed scientific publications./ CNA
