Korça has experienced an increase in cases of hepatitis C. According to data, 10% of drug users, who are tested before using methadone, have been found to be infected with hepatitis C. This is reported by the nurse at the Day Care Center Rehabilitation, Marinela Fustanja, who has shown that there are a number of analyzes that are carried out near this center.

"Near our center there are people who have consumed heroin, specifically people who have consumed it through syringes. Necessarily, these people are the most at risk of contracting the hepatitis C disease. Specifically, near our center, there are 100 people registered and of these, 10% of them are diagnosed with hepatitis C. After they have performed the tests at our center, the analysis which are carried out not only for hepatitis C but also for hepatitis B, syphilis or HIV-AIDS. After performing these four tests at our center and diagnosing these people with hepatitis C, they receive the appropriate information where to present themselves to infectious disease doctors", she said.

According to the nurse, the cause of the spread of hepatitis C is precisely the exchange of syringes using the same needle after taking heroin. The number of cases is increasing, especially among young age groups.

"The causes of this disease are the exchange of syringes, since hepatitis C is transmitted through blood, the exchange of syringes that these people have done after using heroin with each other has made it possible for them to be carriers of hepatitis C.

The trend is increasing for these people, so we call on them to be careful when using syringes. The use of syringes from one person to another puts these people at risk of contracting hepatitis C. Hepatitis C should be emphasized as a very serious disease, which could even endanger their lives," stated Fustanja.

Hepatitis C is one of the diseases that can be fatal for human life, while the appeal is addressed to drug users to be careful in using syringes to avoid the high risk that threatens them./ CNA
