People born in the 1990s have worse mental health than any previous generation. Researchers from the University of Sydney found that there was a marked deterioration in mental health in every generation from the 1950s onwards. The results of the study show that the younger generations are affected much more than the previous ones over the years.

"Most of the attention to date has focused on the decline in mental health of children and adolescents, at a time when we expect their mental health to improve as they reach adulthood. But this study shows that this is changing and that it is not just the children that we need to worry about," lead author Dr Richard Morris, a senior researcher at the University of Sydney's School of Medicine and Health, said in a statement.

"The evidence not only shows a steady decline in the mental health of today's younger generation, but it continues to affect older generations who are now entering their 40s and 50s. We are not seeing them recover compared to previous generations."

Researchers tracked changes in the mental health of more than 27,500 Australians from 2001 to 2020, assessing each age group over that time.

And the mental health of people born in the 1990s does not improve with age, unlike older generations.

Researchers have noted that social media plays an important role in the deterioration of mental health.

Studies show that social networks and the excessive time spent on them cause anxiety, depression and addiction in younger generations, as well as an increase in emotional abuse, toxic relationships and sexualization of youth.

While it is unclear how the trends will continue as Gen Z and Gen Alpha grow up, researchers are not optimistic./ CNA
