Back pain is a common problem among adults. About six percent of people with chronic pain will end up receiving a diagnosis of axial spondyloarthritis, or axial SpA for short.

It is estimated that one in 200 adults in the UK have axial SpA. But there is a widespread lack of awareness, according to the National Axial Spondyloarthritis Society (NASS).

Back problems usually start in the late teens and early 20s, but it can take an average of 8.5 years to be diagnosed, The Sun reports.

If left untreated, it can cause vertebrae in the spine to fuse together, making everyday activities like putting on a pair of socks very painful.

Although axial SpA can be described as "just arthritis", the impact on patients is staggering as they are diagnosed with an incurable and progressive disease.

Axial SpA can be divided into two conditions; non-radiographic spondylitis and ankylosing spondylitis.

The main difference is that non-radiographic spondylitis tends to be the early stage of the disease and cannot be seen on an X-ray./ CNA
