Prime Minister Edi Rama has defended Foreign Minister Ferit Hoxha after the latter's statement regarding the question of whether or not the Italy-Albania agreement on migrants will be renewed.
Rama responds to Euractiv's Eddy Wax through a post on the X platform, writing that it is ridiculous to create an Edi vs. Eddy story.
According to Rama, from the now clear transcript, it appears that the reduced quote was misleading enough for anyone with a vested ideological interest to use it.
Prime Minister Rama has underlined that in the end it remains unchanged: what Italy asks for from Albania, Italy gets from Albania.
"My dear Eddy Wax"
I fully understand that it's ridiculous to create an Eddy vs. Eddy story, but there's no room for that here, because first, I didn't complain about the other Eddy, and second, now that you've generously published the full transcript, it's pretty clear that the reduced quote was misleading enough for anyone with a vested ideological interest to use it. But really, no ill feelings. One Eddy should do whatever he wants, and the other Eddy should endure whatever he has to.
"In the end, it remains unchanged: what Italy asks for from Albania, Italy gets from Albania," Rama writes.
What did Eddy Wax write in Euractiv?
The reporter was surprised to see a social media post from Albania's Prime Minister Edi Rama on Tuesday, which challenged our reporting of an interview conducted on Monday with Ferit Hoxha, the country's foreign minister, which sparked a political debate in Italy.
The interview focused on Hoxha's statement that the Italy-Albania migration agreement will not be extended beyond 2030, because by then, Albania expects to have joined the EU.
The remarks were widely covered in the Italian press, from La Stampa to Corriere della Sera. Antonio Tajani, Italy’s foreign minister, told reporters: “2030 is a long way off; let’s focus on what we need to do now.”
Rama wrote on social media: “To all journalists from Italy and beyond, who are reaching out regarding a misleading quote reported by a media outlet… let me reiterate, clearly and hopefully once and for all, that our Protocol with Italy will stand, as long as Italy wants it to.”
Giorgia Meloni responded to his post last night with a short word: "Grazie Edi."
For clarification, here's what Hoxha told me, word for word: "I'm telling you that after five years, once Albania joins, this is no longer extraterritorial. It is territory of the European Union. First, it's for five years and I'm not sure if there will be an extension. Second, there will be no extension because we will be a member of the European Union."
I would be happy to share a copy of the transcript with the Prime Minister, if he would like to see it./ CNA
