Government announces changes in compensation for former political prisoners

A new decision taken by today's meeting of the Council of Ministers has determined new changes to compensation for former political prisoners.

Minister of Finance, Petrit Malaj, stated that within the next 4-5 years, the full repayment of installments for 6 thousand files will be completed and the time between installments will be up to two and a half years.

According to the minister, this change will not only affect efficiency, but will also better respond to the moral obligation of this segment of society.

"We approved an amendment to the Council of Ministers No. 419 related to compensation for former political victims. We are removing compensation in 8 equal installments. All payments up to 1 million lek will be paid in the next payment. The Ministry of Finance predicts that within 4-5 years, 6 thousand files out of 10,360 in total will be fully settled. These amendments also have other advantages. There will be faster processing of payments. The time for payments between installments will be shortened to 2-2.5 years. Not only will efficiency increase, but the moral obligation towards them will also be respected", said Malaj. /CNA
