Hungary changes government.
Dear friends,
Yesterday, the Hungarian people, in a free and fair electoral process, voted overwhelmingly for the alternative presented by Péter Magyar, chairman of the center-right TISZA party, a member of the EPP. On this occasion, I congratulate Mr. Magyar on his electoral victory and the great trust he has received from the citizens of his country. I express my readiness and that of the Democratic Party for a fruitful cooperation with TISZA, both on a bilateral level and on that of the EPP, in the best interest of our two countries.
Yesterday, through a free vote, Hungarian citizens voted Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and his Fidesz party out of power after 16 years in power. Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, after publicly and with dignity admitting defeat, congratulated his opponent on his victory and hailed yesterday as a celebration of democracy, thus demonstrating his unwavering respect for the free vote of Hungarian citizens and the fundamental values ??of democracy and the rule of law.
It is worth noting that, in stark contrast to Edvin Kristaq Rama, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán did not stage an electoral farce, but free and fair elections. He did not hand out two billion euros in fines and interest to voters two days before the vote in order to buy their votes and manipulate the election results. He did not give pensioners, who made up half of the voters, "gifts" of 100 euros in exchange for their votes, as Edi Rama did in the midst of the campaign for the May 11 elections.
He did not use criminal organizations and drug cartels to terrorize citizens and control their will, as "Ramaduro" did in Albania. He did not decree the planting of 29 thousand hectares of cannabis for votes, as the narco-dictator did in Albania. His government did not build a cartoonish electoral commission like Albania's, but established a commission with broad representation of the political spectrum. Finally, Prime Minister Orbán did not put 90% of the country's media under control and did not block TikTok like Edi Rama; on the contrary, Hungary's most watched television channels supported his opponents.
The Democratic Party, since its foundation, has had an uninterrupted 35-year cooperation with Viktor Orbán and Fidesz for which it is grateful. We have found in this party a valuable friend and ally from the very beginning, in our efforts to overthrow the communist dictatorship and then in establishing friendly cooperation between our two countries. We are grateful for their valuable support in the process of Albania's integration into NATO and the EU, as well as for our cooperation for peace and security in the region and the recognition of Kosovo's independence. We also appreciate the unwavering support they have given to the DP during these years in opposition, in party organizations and international institutions.
Finally, I would like to convey my heartfelt congratulations to the friendly Hungarian nation for the model parliamentary elections on April 12, 2026. / CNA
