Free funerals, the tragic truth of an abandoned country

The promise that if you die today we will honor you is a tragic truth that resembles the scenes of the comedy "A Father Too Much", in a county that has only propaganda left, even though there are two ministers in the government.

A public disparagement has begun for the promise of the opposition candidate in Libohova, Adil Xhelili. His promise that if the citizens of Libohova will vote for him and in return they will receive a free funeral paid for by the municipality is being seen as quixotic in a controversial reality where 500 euros are paid to watch the finale of a TV show.

Libohova, a town southeast of Gjirokastra lying at the foot of the Bureto mountain, is currently inhabited by about 3,200 inhabitants. Emigration has also hit this town, which would offer much more if the local and central attention over the years had been different.

Today, the third age prevails in Libohova. Old people living off farming and ranching or on pensions and child benefits are the "life" of the city. The young people have left, along with the promises of jobs or an urban center that would teem with youth.

In Libohova, it can be surprising to promise "normal", the one that develops local politics, with waste cleaning, jobs, infrastructure and strategic projects. The promise that if you die today we will honor you is a tragic truth that resembles the scenes of the comedy "A Father Too Much", in a county that has only propaganda left, even though there are two ministers in the government.

To promise that you will open places when there are no workers, that you will pave roads when there are no cars, that you will build schools when there are no students, that you will give soft loans when there are no couples, that you will build nurseries and parks when there are no children to attend them is hypocrisy. This today is a truth of a country that is being abandoned day by day.

In Libohova, you can't promise a baby bonus when young couples leave for emigration, you can't promise anything to those who play with life in the English Channel. There you can only promise for the end of the life cycle. Asylum, cemetery, fire station. This is their world.

This is not a cultural promise, nor is it charity. It is a realistic promise where in the local situation, far from the metropolis where the emptiness is still not felt, the elderly found alone cannot be offered to visit Ali Pasha's castle, for his sister Shanisha. To understand it, it is enough to look at the footage of electoral meetings. There are no happy portraits in these pictures. This is the reality and it would be good if we all started to understand it a little bit.
