In one of the largest donations announced since deadly Hurricane Melissa, The Weeknd has pledged $350,000 from his XO Humanitarian Fund to support the World Food Program (WFP) and families affected by the disaster in Jamaica.
According to a press release, Abel Tesfaye, who is also the artist's real name, announced on Thursday that his donation will support the WFP's emergency response, which is scaling up operations to help up to 200,000 Jamaicans recover from the disaster.
Category 5 Hurricane Melissa hit the Caribbean islands in late October, leaving nearly six million people struggling to cope with the aftermath. Jamaica was hit hardest by the extreme weather event.
"We are grateful to The Weeknd for his generous support of WFP's immediate relief efforts. His compassion will provide much-needed comfort and resilience to the people of Jamaica as they face this crisis," said Baron Seegar, president and CEO of World Food Program USA. /CNA
