Marubi Photographic Archive officially enters UNESCO

UNESCO has officially registered the Marubi Photographic Archive, including negatives, objects and documents by Pietro and Kel Marubi, in its Memory of the World International Register, marking Albania's most important contribution to global cultural memory to date.

This is the first time that such an element has been included in UNESCO's Memory of the World, recognizing not only the Marubi family's pioneering work in photography, but also the broader historical and cultural identity of Albania captured through their lens.

From the heart of Shkodra, the Marubi dynasty documented Albanian life across generations, portraying ordinary people, national leaders, cultural icons, and moments of change. Their work is considered the foundation of Albanian photography and a vital record of social, political, and artistic history.

The archive holds over 500,000 negatives dating from the 1850s to the mid-20th century, making it one of the richest visual collections in the Balkans.

The officialization is seen as a moment of extraordinary national and international pride. Cultural authorities describe it not only as a tribute to the Marubi family, but also as a recognition of Shkodra's role as a cradle of Albanian art, memory and identity.

Inclusion on the UNESCO register provides greater global visibility and protection for the Marubi Archive. It also opens new opportunities for international cooperation, research and funding to further preserve and promote Albania's visual heritage./CNA
