Ship carrying 8,000 tons of soda sinks / It was heading from Albania to Ukraine

Greek port authorities raised the alarm in the early hours of the morning after a cargo ship flying the Vanuatu flag sank in a rocky area north of Andros.

The cargo ship, which was sailing from Albania to Ukraine carrying approximately 8,000 tons of soda, suffered serious damage after hitting rocks, resulting in its sinking.

There were a total of nine crew members on board the ship, eight of whom were Turkish citizens and one Azerbaijani citizen. All nine sailors were successfully rescued in a Coast Guard operation.

Two of the sailors were pulled from the sea by a Coast Guard vessel, while the other seven were found and rescued from an inaccessible rocky location on Andros.

The rescued people were safely transported to the island's port and, according to initial information, are in good health. Two Coast Guard vessels are operating in the area, while two others are rushing to the scene.

The passenger ship "Samos", three passing ships and an Air Force helicopter approached the crash site to provide assistance.

Weather conditions in the area are described as good, which significantly contributed to the successful rescue of the crew. The causes of the drowning and sinking are being investigated by the competent authorities./CNA, translated by Kathimerini
