Zelensky: Russia attacked Ukraine with almost a thousand missiles and drones

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Tuesday that Russia has fired nearly 1,000 missiles and drones at Ukraine since the beginning of this year.

Several Ukrainian regions sounded sirens to warn of the threat of airstrikes on Tuesday, hours after three civilians were killed by Russian airstrikes.

"Russia has fired 330 missiles of various types and about 600 combat drones over Ukrainian cities since the beginning of this year," Zelensky wrote on the X social network.

"To withstand such a terrorist pressure, a very powerful air defense is needed. And we are building this air defense with our partners," he added.

A man was killed and his wife wounded Tuesday morning as a result of Russian shelling in the village of Veletenske in Ukraine's southern Kherson region, the regional prosecutor's office announced.

Meanwhile, regional governor Oleksandr Prokudin said Russian forces fired 272 shells into Kherson.

In the eastern Donetsk region, one civilian was killed and another was wounded by Russian shelling on the Mirnohrad settlement, Vadim Filashin, the governor of the Ukrainian-controlled region, said on Tuesday.

Also in Donetsk, in the industrial city of Avdivka, Russian forces attacked a private house, killing a 47-year-old woman, Filshakin said on Telegram.

Russian forces have been trying to capture Avdivka for weeks now in one of the bloodiest battles of the war prompted by Moscow's unprovoked invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Russian shelling of civilian areas has reduced most of Avdivka to rubble.

On Tuesday morning, the Air Defense of Ukraine shot down 15 out of 35 Russian drones, according to the Ukrainian military./ REL
