US President Donald Trump has said that a wealthy donor has offered the government $130 million to cover the military's pay gap caused by the government shutdown.

Trump said during a White House event that the donor is a patriot and a friend of his, but declined to reveal his identity.

"He called us and said, 'I would like to cover any shortfalls you have because of the Democrats' government shutdown, because I love the military and I love the country ,'" Trump said.

The US government is facing growing pressure to keep active-duty military members on their payroll despite the budget impasse. Trump had already signed an executive order asking the Pentagon to reallocate unused research funds to cover salaries.

House Speaker Mike Johnson called the move a temporary solution and warned that soldiers could soon lose their pay if Congress fails to pass a budget. The US federal government has been in a partial shutdown since October 1, as lawmakers in Congress remain deadlocked over a new budget, with disagreements over health care subsidies at the center of the crisis. /CNA
