Four dead after explosion at train station in Ukraine

A person has detonated an explosive device at a train station in northern Ukraine, killing himself and three others, officials said.

Three women – a border guard and two civilians – were killed in the explosion that occurred during a document check on a platform next to a train, Ukrainian border guards said in a statement.

"The explosion was carried out by a man during a document check at a border area at the Ovruch railway station," in the Zhytomyr region, Ukrainian border guards said.

The person who carried out the explosion, 23 years old, died from his injuries while being treated in an ambulance, authorities said.

Ukrainian media reported that he detonated a grenade, but the Ukrainian Interior Ministry has not confirmed what type of explosive device was used.

The Ukrainian border guard service said the person suspected of carrying out the explosion "had recently been detained for attempting to cross the state border in the western part" of Ukraine./ REL
