Russian drone attack in eastern Ukraine kills two journalists

Two Ukrainian journalists were killed and a colleague was injured in a Russian drone strike in eastern Ukraine, an attack that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said was part of "deliberate attacks" on journalists.

Freedom Media, a state-funded Ukrainian media organization, said its team was hit by a Russian Lancet drone while in their car at a gas station in Kramatorsk, eastern Ukraine.

The Russian-language outlet said the journalists killed were Olena Gramova, 43, from the Donetsk region, and Yevgen Karmazin, 33, from Kramatorsk. Journalist Alexander Kolychev was taken to hospital for treatment.

"These are not accidents or mistakes, but a deliberate Russian strategy to silence all independent voices reporting on Russia's war crimes in Ukraine ," Zelensky wrote on social media.

Thursday's attack came after a correspondent for a Russian state media outlet was killed in a Ukrainian drone strike in the part of the Zaporizhia region occupied by Moscow.

Earlier this month, French photojournalist Antoni Lallican was killed while reporting near the frontline in the Donetsk region.

Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine began in 2022, several journalists have been killed while covering the war, although the exact number of victims varies depending on monitoring organizations.

Reporters Without Borders said Lallican was the 14th journalist killed by the Russian military, while UNESCO announced that he was at least the 23rd media worker to be killed while covering the war on both sides of the front./REL
