Cancellation of Trump-Putin meeting/ White House explains reasons

White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt said today that President Donald Trump decided to cancel a planned meeting between him and Russian President Vladimir Putin because he had not seen sufficient interest from the Russian side for peace. Regarding the sanctions announced by the US on Russian oil, she said that Trump saw it necessary to implement them yesterday and did so.

"The president has always said he would impose sanctions on Russia when he felt it was appropriate and necessary, and yesterday was that day. I think the president has long expressed his frustration with Vladimir Putin and, frankly, with both sides of this war, and he has always said that in order to negotiate a good peace deal, both sides have to be interested in a good peace deal," Leavitt said.

Leavitt, during her statement, did not completely rule out the possibility of a meeting between Trump and Putin in the future and with positive results.

"So a meeting between these two leaders is not entirely impossible. I think the President and the entire administration hope that one day this can happen again, but we want to make sure that there is a tangible positive outcome from that meeting ," she said. /CNA
