Operation, British authorities seize thousands of unlicensed weight loss

Authorities in the United Kingdom have launched a major operation against a drug trafficking ring that manufactured and sold unlicensed weight loss injections.

This was one of the largest operations of its kind.

During a two-day raid on a warehouse in the English city of Northampton, police seized more than 2,000 unlicensed retatrutide and tirzepatide (Mounjaro) injections that were ready to be sold, as well as tens of thousands of empty weight-loss pens and raw chemical ingredients.

The supplies were valued at more than £250,000 (€287,000), according to the UK's medicines regulator, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), which oversaw the operation.

Police also seized around £20,000 (€23,000) in cash suspected of being linked to the trafficking of these unlicensed and "potentially deadly" drugs, the agency said.

The operation hit the first illegal weight loss injection factory discovered in the UK.

Retatrutide is in a class of drugs known as glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists, which help people lose weight by mimicking a hormone that makes them feel fuller for longer. The group also includes well-known drugs such as Ozempic, Wegovy and Saxenda.

However, retatrutide is not approved in the UK because it is still being tested in clinical trials. This means that any supply of retatrutide found in the country is "likely to be illegal and potentially dangerous to human health", the MHRA said.

Following this incident, the UK's health secretary, Wes Streeting, urged people not to turn to the black market to buy weight loss injections.

"These unregulated products, manufactured without regard for safety or quality, pose a great risk to unsuspecting consumers," Streeting said./ CNA
