A fuel depot explodes/ 20 people die, hundreds of others are injured

An explosion at a fuel depot in Nagorno-Karabakh has killed 20 people and injured hundreds more, the BBC reports.

Nearly 300 people were hospitalized and dozens of them are "still in critical condition."

It comes after the Armenian government said 13,350 refugees had crossed into the country from the enclave.

The disputed region in Azerbaijan is home to a majority of around 120,000 ethnic Armenians.

It is not yet clear what caused the explosion on Monday evening near the main town of Khankendi, known as Stepanakert to Armenians.

In a statement on Tuesday, local officials said 13 unidentified bodies were found at the blast site and seven others died in hospital.

They said the doctors were working in "difficult conditions".

Since Azerbaijan's occupation of Nagorno-Karabakh last week, thousands of people have fled the area after the Armenian government in Yerevan announced plans to relocate those displaced by the fighting.

Envoys from Armenia and Azerbaijan will meet on Tuesday in Brussels for talks supported by the European Union.

This will be the first time diplomatic talks have taken place between the two countries since Azerbaijan seized the enclave last week.

Both sides will be represented by their national security advisers.

Azerbaijan has also started negotiations with the ethnic-Armenian authorities of Karabakh on the future of the region./ CNA
