The Foreign Minister of Hungary Peter Szijjarto has expressed his support for the expansion of the European Union, and called for the acceleration of this process. He said that if the countries of the Western Balkans were already in the EU, immigration problems could be handled more efficiently.

He made these comments during an official visit to Sarajevo, on Wednesday, March 22.

Hungaria gjithashtu dëshiron që procesi i zgjerimit të BE-së të përshpejtohet sepse stabiliteti i Bosnjës “është gjithashtu i një rëndësie të madhe edhe për ne”.

"Ne presim që Brukseli të ndërmarrë hapa konkretë në rrugën e pranimit më të shpejtë të [Bosnjës] në BE", tha Szijjarto pas takimit me ministrin e Jashtëm boshnjak Elmedin Konakoviq në Sarajevë.

Szijjarto commented on the imposition of sanctions by the EU on individuals from the Western Balkan countries, claiming that they have not achieved their goal.

His remarks echo those of Viktor Orban, Hungary's prime minister, who has called for the lifting of EU sanctions against Russia over its war in Ukraine.

Critics have said Hungary's stance on sanctions has put short-term economic issues ahead of long-term security, democracy and human rights.

Szijjarto said that Hungary will not stop buying natural gas from Russia.

"In the current geopolitical situation, a secure supply of natural gas to Hungary is impossible without Russian resources," he said./ Rel
