The US State Department on Tuesday called on authorities in Serbia to work with the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe to address concerns that observers had identified during the weekend's election process.
"Allegations of irregularities reported by the OSCE and the observation team must be investigated and the violence against election officials, journalists and accredited observers, which we have seen reports of, is unacceptable and we will continue to make it clear to Serbia this, " said State Department spokesman Matthew Miller.
He said that the US State Department is reviewing the preliminary findings of the OSCE observation mission on the elections in Serbia.
"We are aware that they declared that the December 17 elections offered voters opportunities, political alternatives. But they also concluded that the election was marred by numerous procedural deficiencies, pressure on public employees and misuse of public resources, and that these factors, along with the advantages enjoyed by the ruling party, create unfair conditions," said spokesman Miller . during the press conference.
Earlier in the day, senior European Union officials said Serbia's election process must be significantly improved after independent observers found disturbing irregularities, including vote-buying during Sunday's snap election.
The head of the European Union's foreign policy, Josep Borrell, and the commissioner for enlargement, Oliver Varhelyi, said in a joint statement that "the proper functioning of Serbia's democratic institutions is at the core of its membership process in the bloc".
On Monday, the Mission of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe said that "the pressure on voters, the decisive engagement of Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, as well as the advantages of the ruling party have damaged the election process as a whole".
According to this organization, these factors, along with the bias of the media, "created an uneven field for competition." Observers and independent media reported that Bosnian Serbs were bussed in an organized manner to vote in Belgrade, around 40,000 identification documents were issued to people who do not live in the capital, while in a northern Serbian city a team of observers is attacked and their car was hit with baseball bats. The ruling party has been accused of paying voters or putting pressure on them.
Government officials insisted on Tuesday that the weekend snap election was free and fair despite criticism and political tensions after the vote.
"Abuzim i pabesueshëm, vjedhje elektorale.
According to him, the West should rethink its strategy towards Serbia and NATO member states should engage in limiting Belgrade's space for raising tensions in the region.
"I think that the only solution is the creation of a new security situation which would ensure regional stability even after continuing as we are, in a semi-status-quo form", he said.
Serbia aspires to European integration, but continues to maintain close ties with Russia and has refused to join Western sanctions against it over its aggression in Ukraine, primarily because of Moscow's support for Belgrade's claims over Kosovo.
