A dealer could make €4.2 million in proceeds from the sale of a rare African mask he found in the attic of an elderly French couple.

He was cleaning in the attic of an elderly couple when he saw the mask in question and bought it from them for 150 euros.

Historians believe that members of the Fang people of Gabon traveled through the villages.

19th century wooden mask likely purchased "under unknown circumstances" about 1917 by René-Victor Edëard Maurice Fournier, a French colonial governor and plaintiff's grandfather.

It was kept in family ownership until it was sold to a dealer.

The couple had gone to court to claim a share of the sale proceeds, claiming the dealer had misled them about the mask's true value.

The dealer denied knowing it was so valuable and said he had shown goodwill by offering the couple €300,000, the mask's original valuation.

The judge ruled in favor of the dealer and said the couple had not exercised due diligence in assessing the "historical and artistic" mask value./ CNA
