Murder of 5,000 prisoners/Swedish court orders life imprisonment for the perpetrator

Sweden's Svea Court of Appeal on Tuesday reviewed a July 2022 verdict by the Stockholm District Court that found Iranian Hamid Nouri guilty of "serious violations of international humanitarian law."

The lower court's decision to sentence Nouri to life in prison for his role in the mass execution of political prisoners in Iran in 1988 was also upheld.

"Our assessment is that the prosecution's case is strong and persuasive overall, and that the District Court was correct in finding the charges substantially substantiated," said Court of Appeals Judge Robert Green.

Nouri is accused of directly assisting in the mass execution of political dissidents in Iranian prisons. It is estimated that 5,000 or more people were killed immediately.

Nouri is the only person to stand trial for the murders. He has repeatedly declared his innocence and his lawyers had asked for release or a reduction of the sentence./ CNA
