Serbia does not support the EU statement on Navalny's death

Serbia has not supported the European Union's joint statement regarding the death of Russian opposition politician Aleksei Navaly, diplomatic sources in Brussels said.

This statement, on behalf of the EU, was presented by the high representative for foreign policy and security, Josep Borrell.

Radio Free Europe learns that countries that are not members of the EU had until February 28 to join this declaration. Until that date, Serbia has not expressed itself on this topic and this means that it has not supported the same. Even Turkey did not agree with the EU's statement about Navalny's death.

Sources in Brussels confirmed that all other Western Balkan states supported the European bloc's statement, which holds Russian President Vladimir Putin directly responsible for the Kremlin critic's death. Even in the past, Serbia has not adjusted its positions with the EU's foreign policy, especially with the issues related to Russia. Despite the calls from the EU, that each candidate state that aims to integrate into the bloc adapts to the declarations and positions of the EU, Serbia has continued to ignore these calls.

Serbia has also not joined the sanctions imposed by the EU on Russia due to its unprovoked war on Ukraine.

Separately, Navalny, a staunch critic of the Kremlin, died earlier this month in a prison in the Arctic, where he was serving a long sentence on charges of extremism.

His family, associates and many Western governments have directly blamed Putin for Navalny's death.
