Poland temporarily opens the border with Ukraine

Poland has temporarily opened a border crossing with Ukraine, Kiev said on March 28, as government representatives met in Warsaw to ease tensions over Ukrainian grain imports.

Ukraine's state border guard service said in a statement that 120 trucks are expected to cross the Uhrjniv-Dolobicuv crossing to Poland. The service said the crossing will remain open until April 2.

The announcement came as the governments of Poland and Ukraine held a six-day meeting in Warsaw to discuss the issue of Ukrainian grain imports, but it appears the talks did not produce a result.

Border crossings with Ukraine have been blocked for weeks as farmers in Poland demand the reinstatement of customs tariffs on agricultural imports from Ukraine, which were removed after Russia's invasion of Ukraine began in 2022.

Farmers argue that Ukraine is sending cheap grain to Europe, making it impossible for them to sell local products.

"It is difficult to expect any result after these talks, any specific agreement for example on the issue of agricultural products", said Jan Grabiec, the head of the prime minister's office. "We are continuing the dialogue with both sides."

Ukraine's Agriculture Minister Mykola Solsky wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, that talks with Poland were "difficult but sincere".
