The decision of the Supreme Court in Russia could mean an effective ban on any activity in favor of LGBTQ rights

Russian security forces have raided gay clubs and bars across Moscow shortly after a ruling by the country's highest court branded the LGBTQ movement "extremist", reports Aljazeera.

Police officers searched locations across the Russian capital late Friday, including a nightclub, a men's sauna and a bar hosting LGBTQ parties, under the pretext of a drug raid, according to local media.

Witnesses told reporters that the clubs' documents were searched and photographed by security services. They also said managers had been able to warn customers before police arrived.

The raids come less than 48 hours after Russia's Supreme Court ruled that the "public international LGBT movement and its subdivisions" are now considered extremist and face a ban on their activities.

Activists have said the high court's broad and vague definition means authorities can potentially crack down on any individual or group deemed to be part of the movement./ CNA
