Migrant boat capsizes in French Channel, four dead

Four people have lost their lives off the northern coast of France while trying to cross the English Channel in a dinghy in the early hours of today. 

The number of dangerous boat crossings attempting to reach the UK tends to decrease during the harsher winter months, when the seas are dangerous and cold.

But as temperatures begin to slowly rise, trips are likely to become more frequent, with a total of six people having died so far in 2026. 

Authorities said two men and two women died after being swept away by strong currents while trying to board a dinghy. At least 42 others were rescued in the incident between Equihen-Plage and Hardelot-Plage off the coast of Boulogne. 

"We regretfully have to report four deaths this morning ," Francois-Xavier Lauch, prefect of the Pas-de-Calais region, told reporters on Thursday.

Migrant boats often sail along the northern coast of France and sometimes Belgium, picking up passengers at various points along the way. As a result, French authorities often refer to the vessels as "taxi boats." 

The prefect of the Pas-de-Calais region said the death toll could change as another person is suffering from hypothermia and 37 others are currently being treated by emergency services.  /CNA
