North Korea launches ballistic missiles / Seoul's hopes for reducing

North Korea fired several ballistic missiles on Wednesday, South Korea's military said. The increase in missile tests has dampened Seoul's hopes for a de-escalation of tensions.

South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said North Korea fired another unidentified projectile early Wednesday from the Wonsan area toward waters off its east coast. The missiles traveled about 240 kilometers, and South Korean and U.S. authorities are conducting a detailed analysis of them.

South Korea's presidential Blue House called an emergency meeting of the Security Council, describing the previous launches as a provocation that violates UN Security Council resolutions.

Japan's Coast Guard said the last missile fell into the sea about 10 minutes after launch. Tokyo stressed that none of the missiles entered territorial waters or the exclusive economic zone. Pyongyang's actions "threaten peace and security in the region and the international community," said Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara.

According to South Korea's Yonhap news agency, which cited military officials, the object launched on Tuesday was likely a ballistic missile that flew eastward but showed signs of abnormality in the early phase of its flight and then disappeared.

That means North Korea has launched six ballistic missiles this year, following two launches in January and another in March. South Korea usually immediately reports North Korean ballistic missile launches, as such tests violate UN Security Council resolutions against the North's missile program. Pyongyang opposes the UN ban and says it violates its sovereign right to self-defense. /CNA
