No ceasefire for Lebanon/ Israeli airstrikes hit the south of the country

The Israeli military has carried out a wave of airstrikes in southern Lebanon this morning, an indication that for Israel, the US-Iran ceasefire agreement does not apply to Lebanon.

This morning, airstrikes hit the areas of Tyre and Nabatieh in the south of the country after the deal was announced. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has denied that the deal also covers the conflict with the Iranian-backed Lebanese armed group Hezbollah, the BBC reports.

Pakistan, which brokered the deal, said the agreement included Lebanon. Hezbollah was recently reported to have called on Iran to include the Lebanese front in any deal.

Meanwhile, Israel has hinted that it is seeking to create what it describes as a security zone along the border inside Lebanese territory. Israeli troops have invaded Lebanon and there are fears that this could result in the occupation of parts of the country. /CNA
