Kosovo impasse: I am open to helping with the president's issue

The Speaker of the Assembly of Kosovo, who is also the acting president, Albulena Haxhiu, said that she is open to helping resolve the president's issue.

"The meetings are already continuing, there was a meeting yesterday for this purpose and they will continue in the coming days. I am very open to helping, if I can, in this regard," said Haxhiu, during the meeting with the People's Advocate of Albania in her office in the Parliament.

A day earlier, the leader of the Vetëvendosje Movement, also the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, met Lumir Abdixhiku, the leader of the opposition party, the Democratic League of Kosovo, but no agreement was reached on the issue of the president at the meeting.

After the almost two-hour meeting, Kurti said that "we are determined" to avoid new elections, as according to him, even new votes would not bring 80 votes, the number required to elect a new president.

The meeting took place after the end of Vjosa Osmani's presidential mandate on April 4. On the same day, Haxhiu assumed the position of acting president, as provided for by the Constitution.

Kurti has also announced meetings with Bedri Hamza, the leader of the largest opposition party, the Democratic Party of Kosovo.

But, according to a statement quoted by local media in Kosovo, Hamza has responded to Kurti regarding the invitation for a meeting, asking him to concretize his new initiative through an official letter, so that this topic can be discussed in the party bodies and then the PDK's final position can be presented.

PDK MP Blerta Deliu-Kodra told EkonomiaOnline that they have not received any new invitations for a meeting. She said that her political entity will not propose names for president without a political agreement, emphasizing that the responsibility for choosing the president remains with Kurti, whose party has a majority in the Assembly.

Kurti's LVV proposed two names for the position of president on March 5: Glauk Konjufca, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, and MP Fatmire Mullhaxha-Kollçaku. Due to the lack of a quorum, the process has been left half-way.

The next day, former President Vjosa Osmani presented a decree dissolving the Parliament and paving the way for new elections. Osmani herself was aiming for a second term, but did not secure the necessary support in this regard.

The decree was sent to the Constitutional Court by the Government.

The court then issued a ruling stating that the former president's decree had no legal effect and set April 28 as the deadline for presidential elections, otherwise the country would go to elections that must be held within 45 days.

The Vetëvendosje Movement has convincingly won the early elections of December 28 and enjoys 57 seats in the Assembly, but they are insufficient to elect the president, since at least 80 votes are needed in the 120-member Assembly to finalize this process./ Rel
