The United Nations has warned the United States that an attack on civilian infrastructure in Iran is prohibited under international law.
Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, said that an attack is prohibited, even if the targeted building qualifies as a military objective, if it risks disproportionate harm to civilians.
"In such cases, a court will have to decide whether such attacks were war crimes," he said.
Dujarric's statement comes after US President Donald Trump rejected the idea that his threatened attacks on Iran's infrastructure would be a war crime.
Trump has repeatedly threatened to destroy Iran's bridges and power plants if it fails to meet a deadline to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. / CNA
