Spanish police find historic manuscript missing for a century

Police in Spain have discovered and recovered a rare 17th-century manuscript that had been missing for more than 100 years.

The historical document was found by chance while monitoring online sales, where it was listed for sale for around 71,900 euros.

The manuscript belongs to the velvet guild in Valencia and is related to the decrees of 1479, signed by Ferdinand the Catholic.

These regulations marked the elevation of velvet production from a simple craft to an activity with high social status, granting producers special privileges.

According to authorities, the document had disappeared from the archives of the College of Silk Art at the beginning of the 20th century, between 1907 and 1909, and was never officially recorded as being sold.

The current seller stated that he had no knowledge of its origin and that the document was purchased by his father in the 1970s.

The book, printed on green parchment and bound in velvet, contains 26 chapters of ordinances from 1479, as well as the statutes of a brotherhood founded in 1483.

For now, the manuscript will remain deposited in the state archive in Valencia, where it will be analyzed by cultural specialists.

Although it remains the property of the current owner, it will be registered as part of cultural heritage and subject to strict conservation rules under Spanish law./ CNA
