China and Russia veto UN resolution aimed at reopening Strait of Hormuz

Iran's allies China and Russia have vetoed a UN Security Council resolution aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz.

The draft resolution sponsored by Bahrain “strongly encourages” countries to coordinate protective measures that would ensure safe passage through the waterways, including escorting merchant ships. The text was a watered-down version of the original draft, which could have authorized countries to use force to ensure safe transit through the strait.

Eleven countries voted in favor of the resolution, two abstained and two opposed it.

US Ambassador Michael Waltz condemned China and Russia for voting against it, accusing them of supporting "a regime that seeks to intimidate the Gulf into submission".

Russian Ambassador Vasily Nebenzya said the resolution would "set a dangerous precedent" for international law and peace efforts.

Israeli Ambassador Danny Danon said: “Even if the resolution is not adopted, the broad majority that supported it reflects the commitment of the majority of countries in the world to ensure freedom of navigation and to counter efforts to threaten international trade routes.” / CNA
